Those in the entertainment industries who believe Google is constantly up to no good will have a field day with news that the company gave $1m to campaigning group the Electronic Frontier Foundation last year – especially as the money doesn’t have to be reported as a corporate donation. Fortune has the story, which includes a similar $1m payment from Facebook that’s due this year. Rather than donations, these are ‘cy pres’ awards from class-action lawsuit settlements, where the EFF has been designated as the charity to receive the settlement money. Yet any suggestions that the EFF is in the pay of internet giants should be avoided: it has also criticised both Google and Facebook in areas like privacy.
