As Universal Music Group awaits news on whether its latest proposed divestitures will convince the European Commission to approve its EMI acquisition, the deal is provoking more debate in the US Senate. Herb Kohl and Mike Lee, who both sit on the Senate’s antitrust committee, have written to the Federal Trade Commission urging closer scrutiny of the deal, with digital competition high on their list of concerns. “The effect of the proposed acquisition on digital distribution of music, and particularly on the ability of new entrants to launch new services, is particularly critical to determining whether the acquisition will have any substantial anti-competitive effects,” says the letter.
