Concept-album-toting punk heroes and pig-smashing not-very-amused birds… Together at last! Yes, Green Day and Angry Birds have teamed up for a new adventure.
Specifically, the band are getting their own episode in developer Rovio’s Angry Birds Friends game: 10 levels based on their music, complete with piggy villains based on band members Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool.
The episode is being released in the Facebook version of the game, but there’s no news yet on when (or whether) it will appear in the Angry Birds Friends mobile and tablet games.
What we do know, however, is that this isn’t just about gameplay. Rovio says there will be exclusive content – Green Day’s new single Oh Love and another track, Troublemaker, made available through the game too.
Canned quote time! “We’re all fans of Angry Birds,” says Armstrong. “It’s such an addictive game that when we first started playing it we couldn’t stop. Go Team Green!”
In all seriousness, this is a smart move for Green Day, and one that Rovio has been thinking about for some time. In January 2012, its CEO Mikael Hed told the Midem industry conference that the company was keen for music partnerships.
“We have some discussions with labels about what we could do together to give access,” he said at the time. “It is possible to promote music content through our apps as well… We are positively looking for new partnerships, and we have a rather big team working on partnerships, so it’s just a case of getting in touch with us and we’ll take it from there.”
Clearly, someone in Green Day’s team was listening. Here’s a video teaser for the new partnership:
