Most of the coverage of Research In Motion in recent months has focused on whether the company and its BlackBerry platform has a future, rather than its fledgling music service BBM Music. Even so, the innovative service – it lets people choose 50 songs for their collection then gives them access to the collections of their BBM messaging contacts too – is about to hit a milestone that will have a significant impact on its future prospects. In February this year, RIM offered six months’ free BBM Music to new signups in the UK, Spain, Italy and other countries. That six months is now up, so those trialists will now be deciding whether to start paying £4.99 a month. RIM has never announced user stats for BBM Music, though, so calculating conversion rates is likely to be tricky.
