Swedish startup Blicko is the latest company looking to put a social spin on digital music. It describes itself as a “democratic jukebox service which lets people influence the music when they are listening together”. The idea being that users vote songs onto playlists – or ‘stations’ – using any device with a browser, including smartphones. The music comes from Spotify, YouTube, SoundCloud and local music files – i.e. no new licensing deals for Blicko. Users can log in anonymously or using their Facebook and Twitter IDs, and it is free to use. The business model will revolve around cafes, bars and offices using the service for their customers, although this WILL likely require a licence of some kind.
