The number of DMCA takedown requests being filed to Google has increased sharply in the last month, just as the company revealed plans to penalise sites in its search rankings if they were subject to lots of successful takedown requests. TorrentFreak notes that in the week starting 9 July, Google received 719k takedown requests, but that by the week starting 13 August this had risen to 1.5m a week. In fact, during the last four weeks, Google fielded requests from rightsholders and anti-piracy bodies to remove 5.7m URLs from its search results.
