Industry body the IFPI has announced that David Carson will become its new head of global legal policy on 24 September, reporting directly to CEO Frances Moore. His role will involve working with governments, lawmakers and other industries on anti-piracy legislation issues. “He will be a powerful advocate for our industry,” says Moore in a statement. Carson’s knowledge and experience isn’t in doubt: he has worked at the US Copyright Office as general counsel since 1997, “involved on behalf of the United States government in virtually every significant copyright law and policy matter in the past 15 years”. Which hasn’t pleased everyone: “Think he’ll have undue influence with the US Copyright Office?” asks Techdirt, suggesting this is the latest example of “the revolving door between the government and the big copyright maximalists”.
