“It’s almost here” says the media invitation to Apple’s upcoming iPhone launch event, which will take place as previously rumoured on 12 September. The world and its tech-blogging aunt is already analysing the semiotics of the image accompanying the invite: although the large shadow of a figure ‘5’ seems to hint that the device will be called the iPhone 5 – rather than just ‘the iPhone’ following the naming changes for the third-generation iPad. The timing of the event matches Apple’s traditional music-themed launches, so we would be extremely surprised if there aren’t new iPod touches to match the company’s new smartphone, and perhaps the long-anticipated revamp of Apple’s iTunes store and software too.
