The buzz around crowdfunding is also sparking some tough questions for Kickstarter, particularly around what happens if someone running a Kickstarter project fails to deliver on their promises. In response to an NPR piece about the issue, Kickstarter’s co-founders have published a blog post noting that “We take accountability very seriously at Kickstarter, and the questions raised by NPR are important ones”. It notes that project creators are responsible for seeing their projects through, and required to either fulfil all promised rewards or refund backers whose reward they can’t fulfil. However, Kickstarter also says it now has more staff working on “trust and safety” to weed out bad apples among its creators.
