Amazon has announced that in-app purchases (IAP) in apps downloaded through its Android Appstore will now support physical goods as well as digital items. The first example will be Activision’s Skylanders game, which will sell physical toys in-app using Amazon’s 1-Click Purchasing system. The music angle is obvious here: selling merchandise, DVDs, box-set albums… The question is how many music companies will make use of such a feature when it’s still not allowed on Apple’s iOS platform, where IAP is restricted to digital goods, and when Android owner Google is pushing back on non-Google payment systems for apps distributed through its own Google Play store for Android.
