Google got in early with a big new Android stat yesterday to snaffle some of the limelight from Apple’s iPhone 5 announcement. “Today is a big day for Android… 500 million devices activated globally, and over 1.3 million added every single day,” revealed Google’s Hugo Barra. That’s up from the 400m milestone announced by Barra at the company’s I/O conference on 27 June, when daily activations were running at 1m. Analysts don’t see a slowdown any time soon. In fact, IHS iSuppli has published predictions claiming that 451m Android smartphones will ship in 2013, with cumulative Android smartphone shipments topping 1.1bn by the end of that year, and 3bn in 2016. “The Androids are taking over the world of smartphones,” says mobile analyst Daniel Gleeson.
