An emerging trend we’re keeping an eye on is the potential for streaming music and streaming film/TV services to be bundled together. Witness the recent rumours of a Spotify/HBO partnership in Scandinavia (Bulletin, 13-Sep-12), and now also a report claiming that music service Rdio and still-to-launch video service Vdio have been “part-combined behind the scenes” by their shared investors. PaidContent claims that “much of the two teams was combined back in May… Many staff now have dual roles across the two companies”. An Rdio spokesperson stresses that “Vdio operates as a separate company” while confirming the shared resources. What’s seemingly not on the cards – yet – is a unified Rdio/Vdio service with a single subscription. But it would be logical to be exploring the prospect.
