Remember TastemakerX? The US startup raised $1.8m in February (Bulletin, 9-Feb-12) before launching its ‘music artists as virtual stock exchange’ iPhone game the next month (Bulletin, 12-Mar-12). The idea being that people would buy and sell virtual shares in bands, and thereby discover some cool new music. Now TastemakerX is improving its discovery aspects with a partnership with The Echo Nest. The game will now price and track artists based on The Echo Nest’s data on their online popularity, play and other factors. It should make valuations more realistic in the game, but the jury is still out on how big it can become. It still makes us nostalgically pang for turn-of-the-century British web game Popex, mind.
