Streaming music service Simfy has ditched its free tier in Belgium, laying the blame squarely at the door of rights holders. An email to users blames “hove garantiebetalingen vooraf san de platenfirma’s” (‘high guaranteed advance payments to the record companies’) for it being ‘no longer possible’ to offer the free service. The move may be good news for Spotify, which still has its free tier available in Belgium. TheNextWeb speculates that rather than labels being the cause, Belgian collecting society SABAM may bear some of the responsibility for Simfy’s decision.
