Universal Music Group has settled its long-running legal dispute with Eminem associates FBT Productions over digital royalties. It’s been one of the most high-profile disputes over whether digital sales should be counted as licences or traditional sales, with drastic differences in the revenue share for artists. An initial victory for UMG was scrubbed out in 2010 by a US court of appeals, which ruled in FBT’s favour (Bulletin, 6-Sep-12). Two years on, the case has been settled privately between the two parties. Its impact lives on though: a number of artists are suing their labels over similar issues, including Rob Zombie, Kenny Rogers, James Taylor and REO Speedwagon.
