IDC estimates that 27.8m tablets shipped globally in the third quarter of this year. It claims Apple’s iPad took a 50.4% share ahead of tablets from Samsung (18.4%), Amazon (9%) and Asus (8.6%) – the latter includes the Google-branded Nexus 7 tablet. Meanwhile, ABI Research estimates the global smartphone app downloads market, claiming that Android accounted for 47% of downloads the second quarter of this year, ahead of iPhone’s 29%. However, in the first half of the year, ABI reckons that in the tablet market, iPad generated more than five times more app downloads than Android tablets.
