Website Ultimate Guitar has teamed up with Israeli startup InstruMagic for an iPad app called Songful. The idea: “the world’s first ‘song-based’ guitar simulator that allows you to play your favourite songs on your iPad”. A catalogue of more than 200k songs is provided, with accurate chords, and the ability to ‘play’ them by strumming on the screen “at your own pace and style”. The chords and lyrics come from Ultimate Guitar’s (licensed) database, and users can always access the most popular 100 songs even when offline – others are accessed via an internet connection. Songful is being sold for £1.99 on Apple’s App Store as an iPad-only app. It’s the latest example of an app launch that’s as interesting (if not more so) for publishers as for labels.
