As announced earlier in 2012, BitTorrent has started putting ads into its uTorrent software. The release notes for uTorrent 3.2.2 explain that its “new offer platform displays in-client offers from BitTorrent and software partners” – sponsored torrents that appear at the top of a user’s list of current downloads. Users can choose to opt out of the ads, following feedback (translation: angry online commenters around the original announcement). “We’re very mindful of that feedback and of our core values as a company, and as such we’ve been adamant that we maintain the same levels of privacy as always and that we do not interrupt the user experience with our ads,” BitTorrent’s Matt Mason tells TorrentFreak. Offers will include “artist content”, with BitTorrent working with the likes of DJ Shadow to offer bundles of music, video and artwork.
