Yes, insert your own ‘What, VH1 still plays music?’ gag here. Music *is* still a part of VH1, even if its programming has moved on from wall-to-wall videos. Now owner Viacom has launched a site called Artists.VH1 which is part online showcase for VH1-friendly artists (think archive, ‘adult album alternative’ and R&B / soul), and part a way to bring those artists into some of VH1’s music strands on its main channel. Or, as VH1 president Tom Calderone puts it: “The platform offers both established and emerging artists a homestead where they can have more access to their presence across our screens to control their image and opt into a myriad of opportunities.” It follows the launch of the similar Artists.MTV portal, with Artists.CMT still to come, as well as spin-off mobile apps.
