Strategy Analytics has published its latest report into the apps market, predicting that between 2008 and 2017 there will be more than 350bn apps downloaded for smartphones and tablets. It’s also claiming that paid downloads will generate more than $57bn of revenues over this time period, yet thinks by 2017, 91% of downloads that year will be free apps. That means even more developers and publishers looking to earn money from advertising and in-app purchases. “Paid downloads remain an essential component of the app ecosystem. Paid downloads will remain an important way for smaller developers to monetise their efforts,” says director of apps research Josh Martin.
