Classical music artist Cecilia Bartoli has just released her new album ‘Mission’, and its promotional campaign includes a standalone iPad game: Mission: An Investigatore Steffani Mystery. The game is the result of a partnership between label Decca Records and agency Somethin’ Else. Based on “17th century composer turned diplomat” Agostino Steffani, it sees players solving puzzles and interrogating suspects, to the strains of Bartoli’s music. “It is wonderful to have artists that embrace innovation in digital and even more so in a market where digital downloads of music are not as predominant as in mainstream genres,” says Paul Smernicki, director of digital for Decca’s parent company Universal Music UK. The game is iPad-only and costs £5.99, making it a distinctly high-end product in the context of the App Store, where even big console brands like Grand Theft Auto 3 retail for £2.99.
