While Spotify, Deezer, Rhapsody and others go head to head in an increasing number of Western countries, there’s a separate Battle of Bollywood going on between Saavn and Dhingana – streaming services that focus on Indian music, but have a growing global audience.  Dhingana also says that 40% of its active users are based outside India. Dhingana is currently ad-supported, with plans to introduce premium subscriptions next year, having raised a $7m funding round in October (Bulletin, 25-Oct-12). Expect Saavn to come out with its own figures update soon as a riposte: last we heard, it had 10m active users, but it’s been growing fast too.
