No, no the music business: this is music for businesses. An app aimed at restaurants, bars, retail stores, gyms, events, and other companies in the US, helping them play music in their buildings “without worrying about contracts, audio ads or extraneous hardware”. It’s the work of Roqbot, which we’ve written about before: the startup trialled its technology with The Gap last year (Bulletin, 22-Nov-11), and then raised $1.2m of funding in June this year from Google Ventures and other investors (Bulletin, 13-Jun-12). Roqbot has licensing deals with ASCAP, BMI and SESAC in the US, and is aiming to disrupt Muzak in the business music space. The twist: visitors to locations using Roqbot can download a separate app to request songs and get discounts.
