Viddy has been one of the big success stories in the apps world, notching up more than 40m downloads on iOS. The app is regularly referred to as Instagram for video, in that it gets people to shoot short videos, add filter effects and music, then share them on social networks. Now it’s launched for Android smartphones, which could be a big boost for the app’s popularity – Instagram’s Android version added tens of millions of users to that service in a matter of months. Viddy is interesting for the music industry too, because the company has struck deals to license songs by the likes of Ellie Goulding and Carly Rae Jepsen for use as the soundtrack to people’s clips. Viddy has also been popular among artists, including Justin Bieber, who famously invested in the startup before joining the service.
