Crowdfunding site Kickstarter has published some stats for 2012, including the headline figure that 2.2m people pledged a total of $319.8m last year to fund 18.1k successful projects. Music did well with just over 5k funded projects – the most of any category, although games raised more money overall. Those 5k music projects raised a total of just under $35m, behind games ($83m), film and video ($58m) and design ($50m). Unsurprisingly, Amanda Palmer is hailed as one of the key successes in the music space thanks to her $1.2m campaign and subsequent chart success with the album it funded. There’s also evidence of the Kickstarter community, with 570k people backing two or more projects, and 50k backing 10 or more. Overall 86m unique visitors were attracted to the site over the course of the year.
