Nokia has published some preliminary financial information for the quarter, revealing that it sold 15.9m smartphones in Q4: 9.3m of its Asha models aimed at emerging markets, 4.4m Lumia Windows Phone handsets, and 2.2m Symbian smartphones. 4.4m Windows Phone sales shows genuine traction, which is good news for Nokia’s Mix Radio music service – although Nokia hasn’t yet published figures on its specific usage and growth. But the music industry shouldn’t ignore Nokia’s Asha sales either: they run Nokia’s own operating system, and may be an increasingly attractive platform for digital music services operating in the developing world.
