Spotify hasn’t tended to announce many stats on individual artists or songs in its history, unsurprisingly seeing that as data best shared by its label partners. Here’s some news though: Bruno Mars’ ‘Locked Out Of Heaven’ has just become the first track to be streamed more than 1m times in a single week in the US on Spotify. And in a nod to the cannibalisation debate, Spotify is pointing out that this was in the same week – starting 16 December 2012 – that the track topped the US downloads chart with 226k sales. This time round, we won’t try to calculate Mars’ personal royalties from those 1m streams, since that’ll depend entirely on how they’re factored into his deal with Atlantic Records. But the stat sits alongside the announcement last November that One Direction had passed 100m global plays on Spotify (Bulletin, 13-Nov-12) while also selling an album or two around the world.
