Technology industry analyst ABI Research has published its latest market numbers for smartphones and tablets. The company estimates that nearly 196m smartphones were shipped in the final quarter of 2012 – 43% of all mobile phone shipments. ABI reckons Samsung shipped 60m smartphones in Q4 for a 31% market share, ahead of Apple’s 47.8m iPhones (24.5% market share). “It is clear that the iPhone’s hyper-growth has ended, and ABI Research believes that Apple’s market share will peak in 2013 at 22%,” claims analyst Michael Morgan. In a separate piece of research, ABI has predicted that 145m tablet devices will ship globally in 2013, with more than 50% of them going to US customers. iPad mini, as well as a new crop of Windows 8 tablets, are tipped as key market-growers.
