PIAS has announced plans to run a data-gathering pilot using Release Mobile’s Datownia platform, pulling in promotional and marketing data from 10 labels to analyse, and serve up as web-apps for each label. The idea: the pilot will gather information including tour dates, media activity reports and YouTube/SoundCloud uploads sent by labels and artist managers, and give some structure to it. “The information is typically provided in an unstructured manner such as frequent emails which makes it challenging and time consuming to fully exploit,” explains Release Mobile’s William Lovegrove, who says the new system will be a “win-win” process for PIAS and the participating labels. “The labels win because they get a B2B website which they can update themselves by using datownia as a website content management system. PIAS win because the same label data is opened up to PIAS’ own business systems and operations via an API, making it far easier to exploit.” The key selling point for labels is simplicity: they put their data into an Excel document, and Datownia does the rest of the work.
