Nick Cave is the latest artist to launch an app for Spotify’s desktop service. Its focus is on his entire career, including his days in The Birthday Party, and his more recent Grinderman offshoot. Or as he puts it in a statement: “At least an app to make sense of the stylistic mayhem of my back catalogue”. What we like about the app is its approach: it divides Cave’s back catalogue up by moods: Sex, Comic, Heartbreak, Blasphemy, Confessional, Murder and Mayhem, Spiritual and In The Club ft. Pitbull (we may have made one of these up). But there are also playlists of Nick Cave tracks picked by famous fans like Lou Reed, Dave Gahan, Shane McGowan and Jarvis Cocker. The result: an app that genuinely does help old fans rediscover Cave’s archives, while providing new fans with an accessible way into his work. Kobalt Label Services worked with UK agency Retrofuzz on the app, with Cave seemingly heavily involved in the creative process too.
