French site Dailymotion sits alongside Vimeo in being an online video site that has a decent audience, but which hasn’t looked like seriously challenging YouTube for sheer scale for a long time. Still, a report by the Wall Street Journal that Yahoo is in talks to buy a stake of up to 75% in Dailymotion is notable news for the latter’s ambitions to build more of a global audience. Dailymotion currently has 116m monthly unique users according to comScore, and earlier this year it was fully acquired by France Telecom, which has been making noises about looking for a US partner. “Dailymotion needs to find a big strategic partner, ideally an American partner, that will allow it to open the doors to the American market,” said CEO Stéphane Richard in February.
