WMG subsidiary Rhino has launched a new iOS app for The Monkees, offering the latest glimpse at how apps are being used to market catalogue acts as well as newer artists. The features are pretty standard, in truth: a news feed, updates from the official Twitter and Facebook profiles, music videos, links to buy merchandise and tour dates (well, tour dates for the three surviving members in their solo careers, anyway). And while it may sound strange to have a news-focused app about a heritage act like The Monkees, it makes sense in a couple of ways. One: the three surviving members did play some gigs in November and December 2012, so they’re active. And two, three solo careers means three sources of activity, with anniversaries, new footage of the band’s heyday and other content all available.
