BBM-Music

At the recent launch of its BlackBerry 10 smartphones, BlackBerry declined to answer questions about whether its BBM Music service would be appearing on the new handsets. Now we know why: BBM Music is shutting down. “BBM Music service will be discontinued as of June 2, 2013,” explains an email to customers. “For paying customers, April is the last month that you will be billed. In May, as your BBM contacts stop using the service, songs in your playlists will begin to turn grey and will no longer be available.” BlackBerry is offering those customers a 30-day pass to use Rdio instead, which could generate a few new subscriptions for that service. The news isn’t great for Omnifone, which powered BBM Music – it was one of its two major clients alongside Sony’s Music Unlimited. That said, it’s unclear how popular (or unpopular) BBM Music was: subscriber figures were never released.
