Congratulations to Alexander Ljung and Eric Wahlforss, co-founders of SoundCloud, who last night were anointed European Tech Entrepreneurs of the Year in a contest sponsored by the European Commission. They beat founders from Klarna, Rovio, Mind Candy and Wooga to the prize. Meanwhile, Spotify’s Daniel Ek and Deezer’s Daniel Marhely were both nominated in the Young European Tech Entrepreneur of the Year category for under-30s, but lost out to Jon Reynolds of typing-app developer SwiftKey. “SoundCloud and SwiftKey destroy the myth that all good ideas start and end in Silicon Valley. These companies have great futures in Europe, and they show us that it’s sexy and enriching to be your own boss, to create your own job,” said EC VP Neelie Kroes at the awards, although she also delivered a pointed jab at the nominations in her speech: “I notice that none of Europe’s excellent female talent made it onto the shortlist…”
