Social music startup Soundrop wants to help Spotify users discover more new music through a series of new ‘Best of’ playlists. They’re based on genres: rock, dubstep, chill out, electronica, indie folk, hip hop and so on. The playlists are compiled based on what people are listening to (and, more importantly, marking as starred) in Soundrop’s genre-based rooms within its Spotify app, updated every day. The company says it regularly has more than 1k people in its most popular rooms listening to music, so is pitching the new playlists as authorative collections for Spotify users to discover new music from. The data may be of use for labels and artists too, to see which of their tracks is bubbling up among Soundrop’s community.
