Kakao Talk

We’ve been banging on a bit recently about the new wave of messaging apps from Asia – KakaoTalk, Line and WeChat – and their potential for music partnerships. Here’s a new example about what KakaoTalk is doing with artists in its native South Korea, but also abroad. It has launched a new set of emoticons for users based on PSY’s ‘Gentleman’ single, with 12 animated emoticons for people to use in their messages. Four of them include sound clips triggered when they’re posted. The app’s publisher Kakao is selling the set for $1.99 in the KakaoTalk Android app globally, with the iOS version getting them soon too. It’s the second time Kakao has worked with PSY, having released an emoticon set based on ‘Gangnam Style’ in February this year. A spokesperson for Kakao tells Music Ally that the new set highlights the fact that (for now) KakaoTalk is the only messaging app offering ‘sound emoticons’ rather than just animations.
