Spotify has launched a pair of new weekly charts to track the songs that are hottest on its streaming music service.
The Spotify 50 chart will focus on the tracks that are “most listened to” on Spotify each week, while the Social 50 will track the “most viral” songs – the ones that have been most actively shared on Spotify, Facebook and Twitter.
The charts will be localised for each of Spotify’s 28 markets, and are being made available as an embeddable widget in the hope that music sites will feature them. They’ll be refreshed every Monday at midday EST.
“What’s so powerful about the streaming charts is they let you hear what people are really listening to, right now, and not just what they’re buying,” says head of content Steve Savoca in a statement.
The news comes as Spotify starts showing play-counts for individual songs on its service – initially in its desktop client, and rolling out to all users in the weeks ahead.
“We want to be the best artist promotional platform in the world and showing play-counts is a clear step in that direction,” says Savoca. “Now artists can get immediate feedback from their fans on how their music is performing on Spotify.”
