YouTube-focused industry site Tubefilter has launched a new weekly chart of the most popular YouTube channels in the world, and music channels and artists figure prominently. Based on data harvested by OpenSlate, the chart is topped by a familiar face – PSY – whose official channel notched up 45.6m views last week and 188k new subscribers. Turkish music channel Muyap may surprise with its second spot too: 44.2m views last week. Looking down the list, you’ll also find the official Vevo channels for Rihanna (24.7m views), Will.I.Am (29.9m), Justin Bieber (19.6m), Maroon 5 (17.8m), One Direction (17.3m), Pink (15.8m) – in fact, 14 of the top 50 channels are Vevo-branded – as well as Elektra Records (15.4m). It’s not news that music is hugely popular on YouTube, but with the chart due to be published every week, it should provide some good numbers on just how popular the biggest music channels are.
