Timbaland is the latest musical luminary to be investing in technology startups. We wrote recently about his involvement in video-chat app Hang w/, but now he’s chipping in to a $500k funding round for music startup Open Labs. The company’s main product is called StageLight, a piece of computer software billed as “the easy way to create music” that costs $9.99. The company has distribution deals with Dell, Lenovo, Microsoft and Intel so far to get the software into the hands of people (or to bring “music creation to the masses” as Timbaland puts it in his canned quote for the investment announcement). While some artist investments are more about the celebrity’s pulling power (Justin Bieber being the most high-profile example right now), Timbaland’s musical chops should be an asset for Open Labs as it continues developing its product.
