Publisher Kobalt’s Label Services division is certainly making a name for itself as a home for artists of a certain vintage hoping to reach a global fanbase with new music. Nick Cave’s new album topped charts around the world earlier this year (Bulletin, 1-Mar-13), and now the Pet Shop Boys are enjoying their best chart success for a couple of decades. The duo’s new album ‘Electric’ topped the Norwegian albums chart, went top-three in the UK and Germany, and bagged their highest chart-placing in the US for nearly 20 years by reaching 26th spot in Billboard’s chart. Much of this is down to the quality of the music – strong reviews hailing the album as a return to form – but Kobalt did its bit with a release across 30 countries through its network of distribution and marketing partners. “Working with the Pet Shop Boys has been a true partnership, and has shown what is possible when you have a great record and a focused team,” says Kobalt Label Services MD Paul Hitchman.
