Kings of Leon became the latest artist to take part in Vevo and YouTube’s American Express Unstaged series of concert livestreams on Friday. And this one had a technology twist: “a 360 degree camera you control to see the event from all angles” – the first time it’s been used for a livestream on the services. The concert was webcast from London, directed by actor and comedian Fred Armisen. Kings of Leon followed the likes of Vampire Weekend, Jack White, Coldplay, Usher and Mary J. Blige in the series. The ‘360-degree view of a live performance’ idea has been tried elsewhere, though: Beck and Chris Milk collaborated on a concert film where the camera is controlled by facial-tracking each viewer, while startup Mativision has worked with a number of artists on 360-degree concert apps, including Slash and Muse.
