Facebook broke out some stats yesterday for how its social network is doing in the UK, revealing that it has 33m monthly active users and 24m daily active users here – that latter figure is more than 38% of the UK population. What’s more, 20m Brits are accessing Facebook every day from smartphones and/or tablets: that’s 83% of its UK users. “People start the day with Facebook and especially in the UK, which is a very big mobile market, there is a very high percentage of people signing in on smartphones,” Facebook’s regional director James Quarles tells The Guardian. It’s the first time Facebook has talked about its daily active users in the UK, possibly in response to recent speculation that the social network’s growth is tailing off here. “It’s to make clear our audience is growing both in size and engagement,” as Quarles puts it. “If you think about tentpole television events like Britain’s Got Talent or The X Factor, 20 million available throughout Facebook daily is double what that audience would be.” But the real audience for these statements is brands and agencies, as Facebook continues to ramp up its mobile advertising business. “We want to reflect to marketers that mobile is now a big part of the first screen…”
