Nine Inch Nails are releasing two different mastered versions of their new album, Hesitation Marks. The “loud” master will be available on CD, iTunes and other retail outlets while the “audiophile” version will be available for any version of the album bought via the band’s own site. “For the majority of people, the standard version will be preferable and differences will be difficult to detect,” they say. “Audiophiles with high-end equipment and an understanding of the mastering process might prefer the alternate version.” The band are no strangers to experimental release strategies, offering 2008’s Ghosts I-IV album in a variety of formats from an “ultra-deluxe limited edition” for $300 all the way down to a free nine-track version distributed for free through BitTorrent trackers.
