Universal is the latest label rolling up its sleeves and launching a music discovery app on Spotify. Its uDiscover app went live this week, promising fans “a brand new way to find out more about the music you love by generating custom playlists on the fly”. It gets people to choose an artist that they like, then generates a playlist accordingly. However, editorial content is also built in with a Features tab, with playlists and articles from Universal’s team of music experts. uDiscover is more than just a Spotify thing too: Universal says “further uDiscover applications” will launch in the coming months (we’d hope mobile is among those plans). This isn’t new territory for Universal: its Digster playlists service has been live for a couple of years now, including a Spotify app. And uDiscover’s launch follows hot on the heels of the Spotify app for dance-music site Electrospective, originally launched by EMI last year, but now sitting within Universal (Bulletin, 28-Aug-13).
