Nielsen has traditionally provided its ratings and sales data to paying clients in the TV, film and music worlds among other industries. Now it’s reaching out to consumers too, with a new iOS app called Nielsen TOPTEN.

Based on the company’s data, it promises to give people “direct access to what’s hot in TV, movies, apps, products and more… your one-stop destination for what’s on everyone’s list”.

The free app is initially available in the US only, with categories including music, movies, TV, video games, books, websites, apps and products.

The lists can be tweaked by age, gender and location, and Nielsen has teamed up with BuzzFeed as its “featured partner” to showcase trending stories from around the web too.

Judging by the official Nielsen TOPTEN Twitter account, the app will also be released for Android today.
