We recently covered the Google Play teams move into music documentaries (Bulletin, 10-Sep-13). Now Spotify has revealed its own editorial ambitions with a new series called Spotify Landmark described as “the story behind some of the greatest moments in music, told by the people who made them”. The first moment is Nirvana’s ‘In Utero‘ album, which is 20 years old, including interviews with bassist Krist Novoselic and producer Steve Albini, as well as a commentary track for the full album stream. Co-producer Sandy Smallens, whose official job is head of artist marketing and original content at Spotify, tells Billboard that the aim is “somewhat like a ‘Behind The Music’ sort of approach – although we’re more focused on the actual recording and the making of the record and less on the interpersonal dynamics – and an NPR sort of an approach”. Smallens also claims that video will play a bigger role in future Landmarks.
