Apple

Apple announced first-weekend sales figures for its new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c smartphones yesterday, smashing analyst predictions by shifting 9m units across Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The company also said that more than 200m devices have been upgraded to the new iOS 7 software already, but it’s the stat about iTunes Radio that piqued our interest. Apple says that more than 11m unique listeners have tuned in to its new streaming service since its launch on Wednesday. We’d counsel against the rush to proclaim iTunes Radio an instant Pandora-killer though. Not that it isn’t a considerable threat to that service – it is – but because it’s dangerous to draw lasting conclusions based on the number of people trying a new flagship feature of iOS 7 in its first five days of availability. Pandora had 72.1m active listeners in August, and Apple has 11m curious listeners testing its new service out. The time for comparisons will come towards the end of this year, when we know how many of those people have stuck with iTunes Radio, whether that’s led to a decline in Pandora usage, and (perhaps) more on Apple’s plans to launch its service elsewhere in the world.
