British broadcaster the BBC has ambitious plans for its Radio 1 radio station, which is getting a new video channel within the Beeb’s iPlayer service. It’ll show interviews and performances, capitalising on the existing popularity of such footage on YouTube – for example, a recent Kanye West interview with DJ Zane Lowe was watched more than 3m times on YouTube. “I’m very excited about transforming Radio 1 from being just a radio station into being a full audio-visual channel,” controller Ben Cooper tells The Guardian. “Radio 1 has always pioneered innovative ideas and led the way in engaging with young people and this is another huge step in cementing that reputation.” It’s part of Radio 1’s efforts to continue attracting a youthful audience across different platforms: The Guardian claims the biggest viewers of Radio 1’s YouTube clips are girls aged between 13 and 17.
