Apple’s GarageBand music-making app has been one of the best-selling paid iOS apps in the history of the App Store. Now it’s set to make a switch to the newly-dominant business model on Apple’s store: freemium. The news was revealed when Apple updated its Built-in Apps webpage for the iPhone 5s, with this text for GarageBand: “GarageBand is free on the App Store for all iOS 7 compatible devices; additional GarageBand instruments and sounds are available with an in-app purchase.” GarageBand has been a £2.99 paid app since its launch in March 2011, so it’s a significant change – and the idea of charging for additional instruments indicates that Apple has been working hard in recent months on more content for the app.
