Is social curation service Pinterest worth $3.8bn? That’s the valuation being bandied around after the company announced a new funding round of $225m last night. And this just eight months after another round of $200m that valued Pinterest at $2.5bn. The focus of the new round is international expansion for Pinterest: it’s already available worldwide, but it’s recruiting country managers around the world. “We hope to be a service that everyone uses to inspire their future, whether that’s dinner tomorrow night, a vacation next summer, or a dream house someday. This new investment enables us to pursue that goal even more aggressively,” said CEO Ben Silbermann. The company also gave some new stats: international traffic is up 125% since the start of 2013, and mobile is up 50% to become more than three quarters of all Pinterest usage. The company had nearly 50m unique users in March, as a rough guide. But with total funding so far of $564m, Pinterest still faces questions about how it makes money from the tens of millions of people pinning things on its site and apps.
